Batchelder

Brenda (O ye of little faith! Thinkst thou that thy importunings at previous conferences were ignored?) and all: As Kathy Isaacs indicates, though the Batchelder Award is given for a text, there is nothing about
"substantial length" in the criteria-and I don't think that the confidentiality of our discussions is compromised by the admission that picture books were not excluded from them at all. It should be noted that the aforementioned criteria are hung about with conditions and restrictions: no folktales, for instance, no re-translations, nothing from a non-US publisher, and so on-many of which tend to limit the field of qualified picture books. The manual is on ALA's site, if you're curious.

In answer to Robin's question about numbers: again, those criteria limit the field considerably, and I estimate that, in total, something in the neighborhood of 750 translated books qualified for consideration. That's an off-the-cuff guess; perhaps someone else on the committee kept better track?

Peace,
