Everything on a Waffle

I am enjoying the broad discussion inspired by the ALA awards this year. Seems many were caught by surprise, but that's the best part about the awards...

Polly Horvath's new book was my favorite last year. The author, as in past books (When the Circus Came to Town, Trolls), develops a plucky protagonist who copes with hard times using humor and unfailing optimism. Nutty characters and lots of food seem to be other common threads to Horvath's work. I'm pleased that the Newberry committee recognized the author's skill. Humor is hard!

And isn't great that children love Everything on a Waffle, too?
