Dear CCBC-Net community,
I'm finding the discussion on awards of particular interest and very timely. I am currently doing research for an article on the effects (positive and negative) an award has on a book's sales and publicity. I am writing this article for the Northern California Book Publicity and Marketing Association newsletter. The NCBPMA is a nonprofit organization devoted to education about the publicity, promotion, marketing and distribution of books throughout Northern California and beyond. For more information on the NCBPMA, please visit: http://www.ncbpma.org/index.htm
If you have a moment, I would appreciate any feedback you can provide in regards to the importance of awards. Following are a few questions you may use as guides:
What is the importance of having an award sticker on an award winning book? Are there any particular awards that hold more value than others? If so, which awards? Do you find that winning an award creates public demand for a book? In general, how long does the importance of an award have on the sales and popularity of a book? As an example, would a 1998 ALA award influence your purchasing decision one way or the other? Are press releases from the publisher announcing their award winning books of importance? Do you automatically order books that have won awards, whether or not you are familiar with the book? Does your library/classroom have a policy/system for distributing award winning books? Do you highlight award winning books in your store/library/classroom? Is it important for an author/illustrator to tour in support of an award winning book? Do you have any suggestions to publishers for supporting an award winning book and it's readers? Are there any awards bestowed on "non-children's books" that you find of particular importance? If so, which awards?
If you would like to share your thoughts, please e-mail me directly at Rlangdon at cbookpress.org
Thank you in advance for considering my request. I look forward to using feedback from librarians, teachers, book sellers, and book lovers. And I would certainly be willing to share my article with those interested.
Regards,
