I love Mildred D. Taylor's work. But can't be apalled on her behalf. I don't think we should take it as a personal slight when our favourite author does not get the award we're hoping for.

There are many other equally worthy books out there. A Single Shard is an exquisitely crafted, very moving story. I am happy it won. And I am happy that Mildred's work won the Coretta Scott King. Mildred has won the Newbery in the past. It's not as if she's never been recognized by its committee for her excellence.

It's kind of nice when the awards go to more than one book.
