Hi:
Personally, I am thrilled about Park's win. I feel that way too many contemporary/realistic books and writers get nods, while historical novels set prior to the 20th century and fantasy/science fiction titles are overlooked.
I attribute this to the fact to the predilections of committee members. If one is not a fan of a genre, one cannot truly appreciate the contributions of a particular book. These comments pertain to other genres. Yes, I know committee members are instructed place preferences aside--but is it really that easy? Please understand, I am not attacking the process.
I was a little surprised that "Amber Was Brave, Essie Was Smart" wasn't at least an honor.
