I, too, was more surprised than usual this year, especially by the absence of one book and the presence of another.
The debut novel by Markus Zusak, Fighting Ruben Wolfe, was filled with such distinctive dialog and characterization that I'm tempted to wonder if the committee neglected to see the book when considering the Printz Award.
My other concern is for how the Martin Luther King, Jr. book might be used in classrooms now that it has achieved prominence. The back of the book has a list of important dates, and included are the births of King's three children, Yolanda, Dexter, and Bernie. But King didn't have three children. He had four, and his son, Martin III, is not included in the list. How many teachers will point that out to students? Will future editions correct the error?
