Some years ago when I chaired a Newby Comm., I wrote to the committee members something to the effect: "Just remember that when the announcements are made, everyone in the room will know that we are wrong and that they are right." This took place at a time when we simply announced the awards at an ALSC Board meeting (and that is what the present glorified announcements are: an ALSC Directors Board business meeting). Maybe the time has come to return to days of yore and be a bit more modest and less controlled by PIO.
