I appreciated Barbara Scotto's thoughtful comments on the award process. The care, reading, thought, evaluation, discussions and weighing of merit in all of these award committees is deep and very intense. It is a rare committee that doesn't appreciate on some or many levels literally dozens of books that are published in a given year. However the charge to the award committees is not to produce a "best" or "notables" list. It is to honor the most distinguished book. I am always pleased that honor books allow the committee to recognize the fine merit of other great books as well. The number of honor books will always depend on the strength of the year's output in a committee's deliberations. I also know that many members of these committees share numerous titles with children and young adults throughout the year and participate in discussions with kids and other adults. The members are most interested in finding that "best" and do take their charge seriously, thoughtfully and, very often, joyfully.
