Save the date and plan time to prepare for the annual CCBC Am?ricas Award Discussion. During 2002 this discussion will be held from 5:10-9:10 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6, 2002. This event will begin in the Elizabeth Burr Room of the CCBC, 4290 Helen C. White Hall on the UW-Madison campus.

This discussion will provide all participants with an opportunity to read and discussion books eligible for the 2002 Am?ricas Award, which recognizes the outstanding book published last year for children and young adults portraying Latin America or Latinos in the United States. For more information about this award, please visit the Am?ricas Award web site http://www.uwm.edu/Dept/CLACS/outreach_americas.html=20

The discussion is open to any interested adult, including UW-Madison students, academic staff, & faculty; public and school librarians; teachers at all levels; and others with an interest in Latino literature for young readers.

This will not be a program with observors. It's expected that prior to attending the discussion that everyone will have read the books on the discussion list and be ready to participate.

The evening will begin with a brief introduction to the Am?ricas Award followed by a discussion of each book on the list. The discussion will be conducted by one of the CCBC librarians using CCBC Book Discussion Guidelines http://www.education.wisc.edu/ccbc/discguid.htm

A straw ballot will be taken after the books have been discussed to determine the consensus of the group as to the outstanding books of the evening.

There is no registration fee for anyone registering for this discussion through the CCBC, but advance registration is necessary.

The list of books to be discussed on March 6 will be posted soon. The list is not complete at this time, but it will be posted on the CCBC web site during January.

CCBC copies of the books will be available beforehand to read in the CCBC or for overnight loan.

Some of the participants will sign up for this discussion with the Madison Metropolitan School District which has separate registration and participation requirements. Individuals who register through MMSD or through another school district or a public library system in order to receive professional development credit might be charged by their own institution or agency. Anyone may use the CCBC to prepare for the discussion or borrow CCBC copies on overnight loan at any time.

Metered parking for the entire evening is available in the Lower Level parking garage under Helen C. White Hall. (Bring lots of quarters. Notice: it's the LOWER Level in which we're encouraging you to park your vehicle.) Evening parking is also available in the nearby Lake St. Ramp (allow 10 minutes to walk to the CCBC). Car-pooling is encouraged for all of the usual reasons - green and otherwise.

Questions? For more information about this award or the discussion, or to be put on a mailing list to receive the discussion list and registration information, call 608&2?03. We hope you'll seriously consider this opportunity to read and talk with others about some of the outstanding Latino books published during 2001.
