Those of you who wish to comment more to one another about Jonathan Franzen and the National Book Award ceremony may certainly do so privately, but we do want to keep CCBC-Net focused on the books for children and young adults that we've especially appreciated this year.
One of my favorites for sheer fun is Ken Robert's short novel The Thumb in the Box (Groundwood). It would make a great read-aloud with its wonderful, warm, quirky characters and a hilarious plotline involving the Canadian goverment, an unwanted fire engine, and a very savvy mayor of the small village where the young narrator lives. It's everyday folks against a press-hungry member of parliament-?n you guess who outwits whom?
