Me too, but I agree w/ Edie, who says writers have to be nice people? I've not read Franzen yet, but truth be told this makes me want to run out and get the book so I can judge it for myself, not ever having heard the writer speak. And it makes me wonder if all the touring and signing writers engage in these days doesn't detract from the essential thing to be considered -- the words on the page. The days I doubt my own ability, the question I ask myself isn't "can I charm my listening audience?" but "can I write?"
My 2 bits.
