Franzen

On one hand, Franzen's attitude is/was very snotty. On the other hand, judging from the excerpts I've read, his book is dazzling. I'm reading THE CORRECTIONS even though I think Franzen should be pinched.

As for Denise Matulka's question: would we tolerate Franzen's attitude in a writer for children? I don't think so. I think misanthropic, cranky, persnickety-type children's writers would do well to live as quietly as they can underground, letting the work speak for itself. Then, after they've passed on, a biographer can tell us how crotchety they are. At least that would be my career advice.

Back to my hole, Kathleen
