I am new to the list. Perhaps one of may favorites was mentioned before I signed on. It is Black Potatoes: The Story of the Great Irish Famine, 184550 by Susan Campbell Bartoletti. The book captures the unspeakable decisions about life and death that had to be made during the potato famine. I was drawn into the social history and political machinations of the period, so infrequently written about in an engaging manner for young adults. The use of quoted material from oral histories puts the voices of the people in the reader's ear. The reproductions of images from newpapers of the period add to the drama and intrigue. I appreciated the extensive source notes as well as the map and timeline.
