My favorite picture books to give to friends (adults) this year are: "Rocks in His Head" by Carol Otis Hurst. A fun humorous book is "Nursery Crimes" by Arthur Giesert, and a touching school story from Patricia Polacco, "Mr. Lincoln's Way".
Wiesner's Three Pigs is still my Caldecott choice, the illustrations are clever, funny, and of course, expertly carried out.
Newbery choices are hard-- what a great batch of books this year. I really like An Na's "A Step from Heaven". Even though the themes have been written before, Na uses beautiful language to bring her version of the immigrant story to life. If Wolfe's "True Believer" isn't too old to be considered, I think it is a good choice.
