There are so many good books this year that I feel, like several other list members, that I'm going to have to do this in installments.

Coretta Scott King . . .

For illustrator, I like THE OTHER SIDE by Jacqueline Woodson, illustrated by E.B. Lewis, MARTIN'S BIG WORDS by Doreen Rappaport, illustrated by Bryan Collier, and THE BLUES SINGERS by Julius Lester, illustrated by Lisa Cohen.

For author, I like THE LAND by Mildred Taylor, CARVER by Marilyn Nelson, and EVERY TIME A RAINBOW DIES by Rita Garcia-Williams.

I'd also like to put in a good word for MONEY HUNGRY by Sharon Flake which several of my students have really enjoyed, and BAD BOY which I liked, even if it was uneven.

Pura Belpre . . .

For illustrator, ???

For author, I like ESPERANZA RISING by Pam Munoz Ryan, BREAKING THROUGH by Francisco Jimenez, and THE COLOR OF MY WORDS by Lynn Joseph.
