If Love That Dog is the one I'm thinking of (I read a lot of dog books this year, for some reason), then ditto on the accolades! A reluctant poetry writer borrows techniques from famous poets introduced by his teacher and creates some powerful work of his own. Any teacher who works with kids and poetry should be required to read this one.
