At 02:36 PM 12/1/2001 00, Ginny wrote about some of the invaluable online CCBC resources.

One such website of note is the Native Peoples of Wisconsin in books for children and teenagers (see http://www.education.wisc.edu/ccbc/bibs/wisind.htm ). For those interested in further study, may I recommend the following resource:

"Examining Multicultural Picture Books for the Early Childhood Classroom: Possibilities and Pitfalls" by Jean Ann Mendoza and Debbie Reese, published online at ECRP (Early Childhood Research and Practice). The URL for that article is: http://ecrp.uiuc.edu/v3n2/mendoza.html It prints out to about 25 pages (a worthy use of paper), but try to read it online and link to many other invaluable works cited.

I believe that the basis of the work was a conference presentation on multicultural literature in the early childhood classroom. Debbie's and Jean's work is an important, comprehensive + practical work of sorrily overlooked facts/theories. I cannot recommend it more highly. Both educators and librarians will find it most relevant, immediately useful and thought-provoking.

I'd stop and write more, however, my personally-marked-up copy of the work is with my Mom, a K literacy consultant! She grabbed the paper and used it last night at a United Nations seminar for educators about multiculturalism.

Karen Sue...now thinking about her 2001 favorites...
