The Land as Newbery contender

I think THE LAND is an equally fine Newbery and Printz candidate. One third of the book covers Paul?ward's childhood to the age of fourteen. Then Paul?ward ages into adulthood quietly to join the ranks of past Newbery characters such as Taran in THE BLACK CAULDRON and THE HIGH KING, Elana in ENCHANTRESS FROM THE STARS, Harry in THE BLUE SWORD, and Aerin in HERO AND THE CROWN.

THE LAND is a book that actually transcends both children's literature and young adult literature to join those family stories such as A LONG WAY FROM CHICAGO and A YEAR DOWN YONDER by Richard Peck and the novels of Leon Garfield.
