I just finished The Other Side of Truth and loved it, also. I can imagine it working very well in classroom discussions. It's an amazing novel in so many ways.
For nonfiction, in addition to Jackie Martin's book about the boat called Fish, I enjoyed Down Cut Shin Creek, and also Shipwrecked. One YA novel that stuck with me vividly long after finishing it was Every Time a Rainbow Dies. Sisterhood of the Traveling Parents was great fun, and I liked both The Other Side, which has been mentioned already and Freedom Summer, by Debbie Wiles.
