Just got back from a quick trip to Chicago, but got a chance to read quite a bit, a couple of novels that won't be out for a while ( and two to add to our discussion:

Christopher Myers' Fly! This is a gorgeous picture book, a late arrival for consideration of this year's books. It's the story of Jawanza, a lonely boy befriended by Mr. Roderick Jackson Montgomery the Three and his birds. The text is lively, and the illustrations are bold, bright, and dramatic. I find myself looking at the illustrations over and over.

After seeing Graham Salisbury's Lord of the Deep mentioned at the Horn Book Magazine's website as one of the best novels of the year, I finally read it and loved it. It's beautifully written, with lavish descriptions of the Hawaiian waters and exciting fishing scenes. It's a fine novel with solid characterizations and moral/ethical decisions to discuss with fellow readers.
