I share Megan's enthusiasm for The Thumb in the Box by Ken Roberts
It is a really engaging (but not too long) chapter book.
Actually -- I think it was a pretty good year for books for newly independent readers -I am also enthusiastic about The Books of Coupons by Susie Morgenstern, Harley by Star Livingstone, and Robert and the Great Pepperoni by Barbara Seuling.
But -- when we are talking about real favorites for 2002 -- I have to give my heartfelt vote to Martin's Big Words by Doreen Rappaport with illustrations by Bryan Collier. The cover illustration alone is incredibly powerful.
Collier had 2 really notable books last year (Uptown and Freedom River) -and he doesn't dissapoint with this latest effort.
