The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins is my favorite find of the year. I can't decide whether it should win the Newbery or the Caldecott, so I think that it is truly a case of the whole being more than the sum of the parts. From cover to cover, endpaper to endpaper, the book's design is outstanding. Brian Selznick's illustrations dazzle and Barbara Kerley's wonderful story is paced just right on the pages. The rich colors, the historical notes, the "Dinosaurs then and now" page, and the menu from the amazing dinner party add up to a perfect book. Good for dinosaur lovers, history buffs, and dreamers who work to make their dreams come true.
