My favourite "stand alone" fantasy in recent times is Franny Billingsley's
"The Folk Keeper". I read it while staying with my friend and colleague Sharon Grover, and I remember saying to her that I couldn't read anything else straight after it, because I was still "living" in the world Billingsley had created in this wonderful novel.
I'd also like to say that, even though it's a series, Emily Rodda's "Deltora Quest" series has been hugely popular here in Australia. I don't know if it's been published in the States - it's a series in 8 parts, and I understand there are to be at least two follow up stand-alone series to come. It's more of a "popular" series than her Rowan books, and has attracted a wide readership.
