Sylvia,
I teach fifth grade (that is, 10 year olds), but have only placed ENCHANTRESS in the hands of one student. She was the highest student I have ever had, an absolute genius. She came into the year with THE GIVER as her favorite, a book that she appreciated fully. I gave her my Troll edition of ENCHANTRESS when I heard Walker was re-issuing it with a Lowry introduction.
While she read it, we never talked about her reaction, although I assume that she did like it very much. I never considered giving her THE FAR SIDE OF EVIL, but was content that I had planted the seed, and that hopefully she would search out your other books in later years.
I read CHILDREN OF THE STAR (THIS STAR SHALL ABIDE, BEYOND THE TOMORROW MOUNTAINS, and THE DOORS OF THE UNIVERSE) while on vacation a couple years ago and was, if anything, even more impressed. Perhaps this is an imperfect analogy, but I think ENCHANTRESS is to CHILDREN OF THE STAR as THE HOBBIT is to THE LORD OF THE RINGS: just a prelude of things to come. My two younger brothers picked up on my enthusiasm and devoured the trilogy, and have a similarly high opinion of it (we are science fiction/fantasy junkies, all of us). I have recommended it online to several teens of high school age with great success.
Jonathan
