To open discussion of ENCHANTRESS FROM THE STARS, perhaps we could all share our initial reactions on reading the book.

As I slowly read my way through the Newbery canon, ENCHANTRESS was a book that kept eluding me, until I found a copy of it in a used bookstore. It completely floored me. Oh, how I wished that I had read it as a teenager! I loved the complexity and the intellectual dimension to the story. I have since had the opportunity to recommend it to several young people, each time with success, and they admire it for the same reasons that I do, and generally go on to read her other books.

I'm grateful to Walker for the beautiful new edition of ENCHANTRESS and for the forthcoming THE FAR SIDE OF EVIL, and hope that an entire new generation of fans, both young and old, will embrace it.
