I, too have enjoyed Nix's books. Althought it's a series, his Seventh Tower books have been enjoyed both by me and the students. I first found them at the recommendation of a 5th grader.
Of course, Tamora Pierce has been "discovered" by my fantasy readers (and devoured) I also liked "Stinker From Space" by Pamela Service, and "Dragon's Milk" by Fletcher. Although they're older, Clare Bell's books about Ratha are among my favorites, along with Meredith Pierce's Birth of the Firebringer--Not to be confused with this year's release "Fire Bringer-- which is also very engrossing. I'd put it on a a par with Watership Down.
Just a few favorites. Jean Casey
