Dear Community, I have just started reading The Giver by Lois Lowry as part of an extended reading assignment in my Children's Literature Class at Cameron University. Perhaps there are those of you who have also read the book and would like to share your comments.
On another topic, I agree with Ms Kahn. I have also had some conflict with my personal, religious beliefs when reading some Fantasy literature. However, some fantasy underscores those beliefs such as the Chronicles of Narnia. This is the beauty of books. If one offends, it can be closed and laid aside for another one less offensive. Books also challenge our "comfort zone" and make us reevaluate our personal belief systems.
