Thanks to everyone for the comments made recently regarding your appreciation of "Enchantress from the Stars." I am pleased to let you know that the author, Sylvia Engdahl, is joining our discussion of science fiction and fantasy for children and young adults. We are so fortunate to receive the author's perspective on the recent publication of the new edition of "Enchantress from the Stars," and I encourage you to take this opportunity to ask Ms. Engdahl any questions you have about this book, or about her writing in this genre in general.
I would be interested in hearing Ms. Engdahl's feelings about
"Enchantress" now, having lived, in a way, with the characters and stories during the 30 years since the book was first published. Do you feel differently about the book now, and if so, what has influenced those feelings? Changes in the world at large, or in the smaller world of fantasy & science fiction publishing for children? Is there anything that you would do differently if you were to write this story now?
I wonder if you could react to the comment made by Ron McCutchan when he discussed the way you "play with perception; we don't know which of the three cultures is supposed to be "our" Earth..."
People have praised the physical production of the new edition of
"Enchantress" and the striking cover and interior art by Leo and Diane Dillon. Perhaps you could address that as well.
We continue to welcome ideas of other science fiction and fantasy books for children, particularly recent publications, which you've read and/or shared with children, as we move forward with this discussion.
