I loved the two Diana Wynne Jones books you mentioned! Also Kenneth Oppel's books. This summer I attended a writers' festival where he read to us from the third volume.
Art Slade's newest book Dust has just won the Governor General's award for children's fiction. It's also fantasy and an interesting read.
I can't wait for the sequel to The Queen of Attolia. There is going to be one, i hope.
