Gregory Maguire is a versatile writer: serious young adult novels, humorous novels in the farce genre for younger readers, picture book texts, and adult novels. He has written over 15 books for children and young adults, including "I Feel Like the Morning Star," (Harper, 1989); "Lucas Fishbone" (Harper, 1990); "Missing Sisters" (Margaret K. McElderry, 1994); "Seven Spiders Spinning" (Clarion, 1994), and other books in the Hamlet Chronicles sequence; "Oasis" (Clarion, 1996); and
"The Good Liar" (Clarion, 1999).
Short fiction by Gregory Maguire appears in the thematic anthologies for young adults "Am I Blue? Coming Out from the Silence" edited by Marion Dane Bauer (HarperCollins, 1994) and "I Believe in Water: Twelve Brushes with Religion" edited by Marilyn Singer (HarperCollins, 2000).
Dr. Maguire is an articulate critic and lecturer. His reviews published in the New York Times Book Review, The Horn Book, and other review media are always thoughtful. He has distinguished himself as a critic with his published observations, including his review of "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" in the New York Times (9/5/99) and of "The Subtle Knife" by Philip Pullman (NYT 4/19/98). Participants in any of the Children's Literature New England summer institutes know him to be a creative, provocative presenter. He is co-director of Children's Literature New England, Inc., with Barbara Harrison with whom he co?ited "Origins of Story" (McElderry, 1999) and "Innocence and Experience" (Lothrop, 1987).
He also has a fine reputation as a teacher of children within the environment of a writing residency. He will emphasize his own experiences as a young writer and as a teacher of young writers in his lecture on the UW-Madison campus on the evening of November 13.
ADULT LITERATURE APPEARANCE ON NOV. 14: Gregory Maguire is the author of three adult novels, two of which have garnered a substantial following. Those two are "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West" and "Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister." The third novel for adults, "Lost," was just published last month. All are published by Regan Books / HarperCollins. An adaptation of "Wicked" will be presented as an ABC/TV miniseries.
On Wednesday, November 14, Gregory Maguire will give a reading as part of The Marquee Reading Series at 7:00pm at the Orpheum Theater, 216 State Street, in Madison. Canterbury Booksellers and the Orpheum Theater are collaborating to offer this series of author appearances.
