This is the first time I have responded on CCBC-Net although I have been "listening" for years. My name is Beth Martin and I am a Library Media Specialist for an elementary school in central Wisconsin.
I often steer kids to the the three books by Ruth Stiles Gannet. My Father's Dragon, Elmer and the Dragon and The Dragons of Blueland. Although they have been around for a long time (c1948) they are very appealing to newly independent readers.
The content is appropriate for young children who are able to read chapter books but need content that is age-appropriate. Also, it is a wonderful feeling for a young child to finish the first book in the series and be able to come into the library and ask for the second book. After devouring the second book, they still have the third book to read.
