EARLY READERS AND "COMICS"

This is not about a specific title, but it is a question that came to my mind as I've been reading this month's discussion:

What do you think, as librarians and teachers, about "comic" books for newly-independent readers? By comic books I mean European-style, high-quality comics, such as the TIN TIN books. In Europe, France especially, these comics have a long and proud tradition of providing a transition from picture books to longer, more complex stories. Yet it's hard to find a market for comics, other than TIN TIN, in this country.

How do you and your young readers feel about high-quality comic books? Do you buy them for your classroom and library collections?
