One issue for me as a parent in choosing chapter books has been the fact that my son is a reluctant, ESL reader, and a kid who would rather mow the lawn than read.
The hardest thing has been finding easy books of interest to kids older than first or second grade. One early favorite was LOST ON A MOUNTAIN IN MAINE, a true account of a boy lost on Mt. Katahdin years go. And though Dimitri read lots of books like Magic Treehouse, there was still a need to bridge those books and the next step. Even now, as a freshman in high school, he's more comfortable with short chapters.
