It was just brought to my attention that this message about an event on Oct. 19 was not received by the CCBC-Net community at the beginning of the month. Please send this information to anyone who might be interested.
Was there ever a time when books about peace and justice were more craved, more needed than they are now?
You're encouraged to join others who are also interested in books with peace and justice themes & topics on Friday, October 19, at 1:30 p.m. in New York City. That's when the 2001 Jane Addams Children's Book Award and Honor Book recipients will be formally acknowledged. The presentation will take place at 777 United Nations Plaza
(2nd Floor) on the corner of 44th St. & 1st Ave.
It's important to let our hosts know if you're planning to be there and to indicate who you're bringing with you. Please RSVP to Ms. Isha Dyfan, Executive Director of the Jane Addams Peace Association, phone 212h2?30 or e-mail: japa at igc.org
The honored authors and artists (listed below) and/or their representatives will be at this event to respond in person.
Ms. Nane Annan will be part of the celebratory event, as will Linda Wasserman, the national president of the Jane Addams Peace Association. I'll be there, and so will Mary Elting Folsom, Ethel Biro, and many others within the WILPF and the children's book communities. Absolutely everyone who is interested is welcome to attend. Tell others. This is a time when we want to be with those who share similar hopes as to how books for young readers can and do make a difference.
Earlier this fall Ms. Dyfan had made arrangements for this celebration to take place in the United Nations, but now the United Nations buildings are off-limits. Instead we'll gather in a room overlooking the wondrous view of the colorful flags of many nations flying over the United Nations buildings, a grand backdrop for the festivities.
There will be book signing during the reception following the presentations. The honored books will be available for sale that afternoon, thanks to Bank St. Books.
Join your colleagues and friends who will be there to offer congratulations to the authors, artists, editors and publishers of the fine 2001 Jane Addams Children's Book Award Winners and Honor Books. Here they are!
LONGER BOOKS: WINNER: Esperanza Rising written by Pam Mu?oz Ryan (Scholastic Press); and HONOR BOOKS: 1.
