I do not agree with you, Dean. I would not deny an entire age group this book so easily. The experiences of Amber and Essie are familiar to many children of bridge book age. Yes, perhaps not at a school like Ensworth, but you understand my point. As Gary Paulsen says, "So, it's OK for a kid to have these experiences but we don't want them to read about it?" I think, while being a masterpiece in many ways and a brilliant book to use with 3rd thru 5th grades, the book would work very well in many 2nd grade classrooms and fits well with our discussion of books for emerging readers.
