reading levels

I have to say that I have been very surprised in the past two years to notice that students have not felt degraded by reading labels on the books. Reading has increased, especially for the lower level readers, since we have put clearly marked levels on the spines.

I too also felt that this would be like branding a kid DUMB..until I tried it. I am always in the stacks with groups of kids when they are selecting books and I have not witnesses any kind of shame. This has surprised me, I must say. I personally think that the slow reader has actually been relieved to have some handle on his or her learning. When they find out where they should look for something they can have success with, they feel successful right there. I urge all of you to reconsider this notion.
