I love how so many folks are chiming into this conversation with gusto. I also love the term Bridge Books. Not being a librarian, I'd never heard that before....
As a children's literature person, I take especially to heart my own child beginning to read these bridge books. I think folks have mentioned a list on the CCBC web site by one of my mentors, Margaret Jensen, filled with excellent suggestions for books for new readers. Here's the link in case you haven't seen it.

I think humor helps a great deal children cross the bridge from a listener to a reader. My daughter magically emerged with some of the funniest books of all in her hands -- Minnie and Moo (Denys Cazet) in particular. If you don?t' know these, you should. We all laughed and laughed our way into literacy. DK, Inc originally published them, and I believe HarperCollins recently published a new one.
I also love recommending riddle books in this category, because word play and multiple meanings are a memorable a-ha of learning. I never met a child who didn't appreciate Bennett Cerf's Book of Riddles....
Peace,
Nick
