I always thanked the financial forces which allow books to be published for Dick King Smith. He has so many books on so many subjects that one could start with his titles when a child was in the "only read to" stage well into reading and re-reading longer, more complex books. Prime chapter books for the 1st and 2nd grade crowd: the Sophie stories--the little girl who wants only to be farmer. Some of his "older" books are somewhat precious and seem to be reaching for something religious or some such, but the "plain spoken" ones are full of mirth, serious purpose (not too serious) and great characters--in the sense of "S/he's such a character.) and involving animal inventions.

When was the last time YOU smuggled an ostrich egg from a farm on a school trip? (A delicious breakfast for many folk let me tell you.) And--the pencil sketches by various artists help "decode" the stories.

(when you're a BIG grandma, you need either several dozen eggs, or one big one) Please, please don't send the PETA folk after me.
