I too have turned to funny books. I find it reassuring that others have done the same. I was feeling a tad guilty about laughing along with my second graders, but now I feel that it must be a normal reaction. My students are silently reading at this moment and I see their independent choices: Shel Silverstein, Dav Pilkey, Anthony Browne, the Boxcar Children and Mary Hoffman's Amazing Grace. Three children are reading Kevin Henkes books.
Here are some of the books I have read since Tuesday.
The Pig's Picnic (truly one of the funniest picture books ever) and The Mightiest, both by Keiko Kasza Many Anthony Brown books: Gorilla, Voices in the Park, My Dad Clever Cat by Peter Collington And, we started a new chapter book in the middle of the week. I decided on Lady Lollipop by Dick King-Smith.
Most of us are in unchartered territory here and are doing our very best, I am sure.
I am a child of war and grew up in a career military family. My dad left for VietNam when I was in the sixth grade and was gone for 13 months. I do remember reading a lot that year. And, I actually remember a series I read from book one to the end. As strange as it might seem the series was The Happy Hollisters: Easy. Idealized. Happy white wealthy American family. Even thinking of the battered covers brings me right back to the living room couch. It was a clear break from dinner in front of the television and my mother's perpetually concerned face.
Keep the faith, Robin
