Books on the Middle East for 9-yr-olds

Hi CCBC,

I've been a lurker on this fine list for a few weeks now, and I have a query that's personal but might also be useful to me and others professionally. Yesterday, Karen Radtke wrote: "I also worry about the Muslim children in America and have talked to my own children about this situation as they watch adults on television say unspeakable things to these innocent bystanders."

I'm not in America, but my own stepson's father is a Palestinian. Stefan, age 9, is not being reared as a Muslim, but his father is a (non-practicing) Muslim. Stefan was curious about events in the Middle East and their meanings before September 11, and even more so now. I'm keen in a general way to encourage him to read, and also keen to encourage his interest in a topical issue that's especially important to him personally as he grows up and figures out where he fits in in the world.

So, are there books out there, either fiction or nonfiction, that are either written for 9-year-olds, or could be read by one, that would foster a measure of understanding or at least stimulate and direct curiosity about the very fraught issues in the Middle East, or at least are *about* the region generally, even in a non-political way? I realize this might be a pretty ambitious question to ask - there may be no such books. If not, there should be! I'd be very happy for any responses whether private to my address below or on-list.
