September 2001 Fiction and nonfiction about athletes and athletics, including books by Margaret A. Edwards Award winner Robert Lipsyte, and new books by Sue Macy ("Girls Got Game"), Walter Dean Myers ("The Greatest: Muhammad Ali"), Charles R. Smith ("Short Takes"), and Markus Zusak
("Fighting Ruben Wolfe"), as well as sports books for younger children, such as the new series by Gail Gibbons ("My Baseball Book," etc.).
October 2001 Books for (newly) independent readers. What books do you suggest for young readers who are ready to tackle a novel? What are some of the books you read aloud or booktalk to exicte newly independent readers and encourage them to try a novel or other challenging book on their own? What books to you suggest to parents and others who are looking for age-appropriate materials for skilled younger readers?
November 2001 We're always open to suggestions for future CCBC-Net topics, and this is one of them. As one person wrote to us, there seems to be renewed interest in Sylvia Engdahl's books. Perhaps that's because of the recent new edition of "Enchantress from the Stars" (Walker, 2001). We want to look at this and other works of science fiction and fantasy during November. We'll provide more information next month, but for now, some of you might want to look for that book in order to get ready for the November discussion.
