Robin, Ruth, and Brooke have each expanded our discussion of sports books for young children by suggesting books second graders enjoy
(Robin) and books even some preschoolers enjoy (Brooke). We welcome other suggestions from those of you who know the kids and the books they enjoy on their own, or enjoyable books you bring to their attention.

Ruth referred to the Matt Christopher "industry," which in itself is a fascinating aspect of what someone else might also want to talk about. Any takers?

I want to go back to what you said, Robin, about your second graders being "less interested in books about the sports than they are in books about sports stars." You also wrote that the series books about sports stars "certainly vary in quality from publisher to publisher and author to author." You pointed out the characteristics of books appealing to your second graders: "the formula of quick pace, lots of information and photos seem perfectly acceptable for what it is."

Do your second graders ever say that some of the books about living sports stars published are out of date? That the athlete has now been traded to another team, etc.? In other words, does currency matter to the second graders you know ?

Thanks for reminding us, Robin, that your "reading program is based solely on trade books, I have books of all sorts in my room. They do have to appeal to strong readers and emergent readers alike." Wonderful ! It's essential for all of us to remember that we're talking about books for all children. All. Books for children to read independently while they're learning to read, as well as books to hear a teacher, librarian, or parent read aloud. Books about male athletes. Books about female athletes.

It sounds as if by the end of the school year, the more substantial sports books are the memorable ones for your second graders, Robin. Or is this just wishful thinking on my part? - Ginny
