A BOOK OF FACTS: If anyone wants more information about the World Trade Center buildings, encourage them to look at David Macaulay's book "Building Big" (Houghton Mifflin, 2000). A few days ago I noticed an article in one of the newspapers referred to the information in Macaulay's book. Does this remind any of us that excellent nonfiction for young readers sometimes contains all any adult needs or wants to know, and - besides that - often we can understand it better, too !

A PHOTO ALBUM FROM THE WORLD: A colleague in the UW-Madison Library System sent this album to us today. If you haven't seen most of these photographs yet, take a minute to see how some of the people in other nations mourn the recent catastrophes. I thought I didn't want to look at them, but now that I have, I'm glad I did. The album was created by Heleni M. Pedersoli in McKeldin Library, University of Maryland, College Park http://www.wam.umd.edu/~hughesa/thankyou.htm

TWO INVITATIONS: Just before the time everything became unraveled, I had carried the slim, colorful 48-page anthology of poems for very young beginning readers to my desk. I planned to write to the CCBC-Net community about
"Sports! Sports! Sports!: A Poetry Collection: selected by Lee Bennett Hopkins with pictures by Brian Floca (An I Can Read Book / HarperCollins, 1999). It's a fine assemblage of short poems by Lee, Michael Strickland, Nikki Grimes, J. Patrick Lewis, Tony Johnston, Myra Cohn Livingston, and others.

Lee, are you still there? Can we take you up this week on your invitation to suggest poetry? If that's not possible, we'll understand.

And - Susan Kuklin, we hardly had time to relish the marvelous words you shared with us on Sept. 11 about creating "Hoops with Swoopes." And you've told me there's more to be said about this book's story. I know you're safe. I also know you've been through a lot, and it keeps coming. But if you have the heart, energy, and time to share more about your fine new book with us, we're ready!

Peace, Ginny
