First of all, I'm glad to hear that some people in NYC are OK. Here in California
(Berkeley), children's librarians are also talking about books to help cope, whether to hold regular programs, etc. My own feeling is that kids let us know when they want to deal directly with what's happening. Otherwise, they need some "normalcy." I was at first surprised, and then not, that I had a large and lively turnout at a toddler storytime on Wed. night. Parents wanted their kids to have fun. My own son
(almost 14 y.o.) reacted to too much exposure at school by shutting down emotionally, and escaping rather intensely into a Harry Potter book on CD I happened to have brought home from work on Sat. Thank god for escapes.
But at the same time, some indirect approaches can be nice, like books that happen to be about friends who argue and then resolve, or about anger.
