Here a few old favorites:
Sluggers: Twenty-Seven of Baseball's Greatest. George Sullivan. S&S Paperback, 74pp. ISBN: 0689824556 This one was always a cinch to use to tempt reluctant readers. Now in a newer PB edition. But--I admit it-- I LOVED the original hard cover with it's photo of only Jose Conseco's arms . A true guilty pleasure. In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson Betty Bao Lord. Illus. by Marc Simont. Harper Collins PB ed. A big book for Brooklyn. And perfect choice for both boys & girls.
'Diversity?' Its in there... but naturally. Part of Shirley's own story. NEVER the 'point' with a capital "P." > PS Any truth to the rumor that Avi makes a cameo appearance as Adam here? And is that Betty siting in the classroom (in the photo) in his recent Don't You Know There's A War On? What of Freddy and the Baseball Team From Mars? Still readers? Esp. with the Overlook Press' handsome reissues of the Walter Books series? That and the Tunis Kid from Tomkinsville series were early favorites of my son--now a 20 year old, former Yankees 'Bleacher Creature.' (He can now--only VERY occasionally -- even afford a field box seat.) Is a love for sports fiction often transmitted along with DNA? I think my own love for football and baseball was 'hard wired.' bg
