Others have mentioned Naomi Shihab Nye's books but I just wanted to chime in. Her middle grade novel HABIBI is one of my favorites, the story of a Palenstinian-American girl whose family moves back to her father's homeland. It's touching and lyrical and enlightening. Although the protagonist is a girl and there is just a touch of romance, I think it would be accessible to a 9-year-old boy.
And Naomi's anthology of Middle Eastern poetry, THE SPACE BETWEEN OUR FOOTSTPES, is also wonderful and would be great for high school kids. I took it home with me to read on Wednesday night and found a good deal of comfort in it.
