Maybe we find hope in Cormier in that most of us can identify with both Jerry and Goober and Obie (Was Cormier a fan of Andy Griffith?) and realize that we are not the only ones who are sometimes weak and afraid, but we can really see, from a detached point of view, the danger and evil of such a course. Maybe reading this book will jiggle the silent bystanders to take action and support the rights of individuals to be different. It's kind of an earlier version of "Star Girl" which has moved many a teen in this generation to take a more thoughtful position regarding the herd. I think that "The Chocolate War" reaffirms in us the determination to keep going in our own directions, even knowing that the way may not be smooth. We count the costs before we sign the bill, but sign it we do.
