In the end, with Cormier it all comes down to a matter of integrity. "As long as what I write is true and believable, why should I have to create happy endings? My books are an antidote to the TV view of life, where even in a suspenseful show you know before the last commercial that Starsky and Hutch will get their man. That's phony realism. Life just isn't like that." And to those who accuse him of celebrating hopelessness, he has a challenge, the plain message of THE CHOCOLATE WAR. "If you're going to fight this kind of thing, you've got to be collectively good," he says simply. There IS hope--but we must create it for ourselves.
