I know that this is going to get tedious but I have to sound off on this again -- please, please, please those reading Cormier for the first time keep in mind these two things -- The Chocolate Wars was published in 1974 and I am the Cheese in 1979 -- there just wasn't the same overwhelming number of starkly realistic fictional works for teens being published at that moment in time and what other fiction published at that period sounds as contemporary today and is as fresh and as alive and as powerful as do these books. In reading the early Cormier in particular what I find most impressive and overwhelming is the feeling that I could be reading a novel published now not a novel that was published in the case of The Chocolate Wars more than 25 years ago.

If nothing else -- that alone is astonishing.
