neutral or emotional?

But we DON'T read them in neutral gear--in fact, they are meant to touch us, upset us, move us. Children, especially, are wide open to the emotional pull of novels. And that is why some of us love Cormier and some of us would rather never read another of his raw and disturbing novels.
